I Need Your Help - Contest Ideas

Posted in Community, Business, Events, News from Chuck on October 17th, 2006

First off, I want to congratulate the winner of last week’s NashobaValley.com Members Contest. It was…

Carol Roberts of Townsend!

Carol’s tip was:

Apple Fest
Celebrate Fall on October 14th! The Townsend United Methodist Church will be having an Apple Fest from 8:30 AM to 3:00 Pm. There will be tours of the bell tower and Johnny Appleseed will be visiting from noon to 2:00 PM. There will be antique appraisals (3 items for $10.00) from 8:30 to noon and a Ham and Bean Supper from 4:30 to 6:30. Home made apple pies and other apple goodies will be available for sale as well. Stop and visit the “Church on the Hill”, 265 Main Street, and while you are there, visit the Flea Market across the street on the Common.

From what I hear, the Apple Fest was a big success! Congratulations Carol!

Now, I’m going to ask you for yet another favor (oh boy, here he goes again!)…

In order for NashobaValley.com to be a success, I need to get as many residents of the Nashoba Valley region to sign up for the site as possible. This will allow me to go to businesses and say, “hey, we have over 1,000 residents who want to hear about your business and want to come in with some savings coupons.”

Sounds reasonable, right? The problem comes in trying to entice your friends and neighbors to sign up for the site. I’ve been advertising in the local paper (in the Nashoba Valley Chronicle). This has given me very mixed results, and I’ve changed my ad for this week. But, the bottom line is the site is growing a bit slower than I’d hoped.

So, what I want to do is create a contest to help promote new members, and I’ve come up with a few different ideas:

  1. Pay $1 for every person that you send to the site who signs up. This is very similar to the Tell A Friend Race Contest we had during the pre-launch, but this time, I’m paying cash for every sign-up. I would have to make $5 the minimum I would pay out because I can’t send out hundreds of checks. In addition, I would give an iPod Nano to the first person to refer 15 people.
  2. Create a Nashoba Valley screensaver and have a contest for the photos that would be included in the screensaver. I would choose the five photos I thought best represented each town (for a total of 55 photos), and pay $10 per photos for a total of $550 in prize money. The screensaver would only be available to registered members of the site.
  3. A school fundraiser contest where I would donate $250 to the school system for each town when 150 people had signed up from that town. This would be a total of $2,750 for the school systems.

What I’d like to know is what you think of each of these ideas, and I’ll put the top vote getter in action as soon as next week. You can vote for your favorite idea at:

www.NashobaValley.com/contest.html

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a lot of people about my vision for NashobaValley.com, and everyone has been very positive. I would really like to make this site work for the communities of the Nashoba Valley, and the only way is to get help from the people who will benefit most.

So please take a couple of seconds to take the little poll I have set up and let me know what you think is the best way to attract new visitors. And, if you have a better idea, there’s an “Other Ideas” category that you can fill in and let me know.

Thanks, and I’ll be sending out another email a little later this week with my smiling face. I think I’m just about ready to smile after all the work I’ve been putting in getting the site to work the way it should.

Regards,

Chuck

P.S. Don’t think I’ve forgotten about putting a picture of myself smiling up somewhere. I will have my wife take a picture as soon as she and I can both get in the same room at the same time, what with all the kids activities happening right now (Pop Warner football, soccer, band, chorus, karate, homework, new puppy, etc.). Shouldn’t be too much longer. And I’m sure you can’t wait (yeah, right!).

P.S.S. I’m going to be phasing out the pre-launch list next Friday, October 6th. So, if you want to keep receiving great info about what’s happening in the Nashoba Valley, make sure you register at http://www.NashobaValley.com.

Why Isn’t Chuck Smiling?

Posted in Community, Business, Events, News from Chuck on September 30th, 2006

After the article about NashobaValley.com came out in the Free Press last week, the number one question I got from people was…

“Why isn’t Chuck smiling?”

Chuck Smith Not SmilingThe answer - I had to get some kind of photo in to the paper in a very short amount of time. I got the call from the reporter on Tuesday night, during the week in Boston where I was at the trade show. I needed to use a picture I already had on my computer, and that was the one I chose.

Big mistake, I guess. I got more people asking me if I was having a bad day, or if my dog had died, than I would have liked. I guess most people who know me aren’t used to me having some kind of stupid grin on my face.

So, just to prove that I can smile, I’m going to have my wife take a picture of me smiling over the next couple of days. I’ll post it to the site somewhere, and let you know where it is. But rest assured, I do like to smile, and even though I have a face for radio, I’ll prove it.
On to some more interesting stuff…

Tell A Friend Race Contest

First off, on the Tell A Friend Race Contest, noone made it to the 15 referrals. But, there were two people who had 7 friends sign up. So, I’m going to give a 2 GB iPod Nano to…

  • Melissa Fetterhoff

and

  • Jennifer Koulopoulos

I’ve just ordered the iPods, and they will be in some time this upcoming week. I’ll get them to Melissa and Jennifer as soon as possible.

Clearing Up Some Confusion

As is usual when you’re winging it, there tends to be some confusion around some of the NashobaValley.com features. So, in an attempt to make everyone understand a little better, I’m going to answer some of the questions I’ve received over the past few days.

Question: Does my charitable organization have to pay to list its events?

Answer: No! If you are a charitable (church, non-profit, etc.) or community (youth sports, senior activities, town government, etc.) organization, you can request to have Community Leader status. This will let you post as many of your organization’s events as you like. All you need to do is be registered at the site, and then click on the “My Events” link and then click on “List Your Event.”

Once on this page, there will be a link that says “click here to complete the request form. On this page you’ll be able to submit your Community Leader request.

Question: Why can’t I put a web site link or email address for my business in my directory listing?

Answer: Basic listings have only a business’ name, address, and phone number. To get a link to your web site, you would need to purchase an upgraded listing. The enhanced business listings, and the other advertising opportunities - banner ads, sponsored listings, coupons - are the only way that I make any money from NashobaValley.com. I would like to do the site for nothing, but the cost of development, hosting, and the time it takes means that I have to charge something.

But, the advertising is very inexpensive. Enhanced business listings start at only $19 a month, which is far less than any other form of advertising that you could get. Plus, the community is very targetted for local businesses - it’s the residents of the 11 towns in the Nashoba Valley. So, you not only get inexpensive rates, but an audience that is matched to your customers.

Question: How do I enter the weekly contest?

Answer: First, you need to be registered on the site. Next, once you’ve completed the registration process, you simply need to log in to your account and go to the “Win Prizes!” page. Once there, simply hit the “Enter To Win” link and enter your tip.

As far as upping your chances to win the contest, here’s a few suggestions. First, vote for your own entry. This is acceptable, and in fact encouraged. Next, have all your friends go to the site and vote for your entry. Finally, you can vote for any entry once every 24 hours, so you can go back and vote for your entry once a day (and so can your friends). The more votes, the higher your score. The higher your score, the better the chance you have of winning. And, it’s all perfectly acceptable.

Question: Do you want any suggestions for improving NashobaValley.com?

Answer: Absolutely! If you have a suggestion on how I can make NashobaValley.com better, please just click on the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of the page or under the “About Us” link. I welcome any constructive comments on how I can make this more useful to you and the rest of the Nashoba Valley community.

Nashoba Valley Screensaver - Help Me Please!

I have a crazy idea about making a Nashoba Valley screensaver. Basically, it will be photos of the area with some music (if I can find some appropriate public domain or other non-copyrighted music for free or little money). But, I need your help…

If you have some ideas of what I should go out and photograph for the screensaver, please send your suggestions to chuck@nashobavalley.com. Or, if you have a photo you would like included in the screensaver, and you own the copyrights (i.e. you took the picture), please let me know and I’ll consider adding it.

It will probably take me a few weeks to take the pictures and figure out how to make the screensaver, but I think it will be a nice little screensaver for local residents. So let me know your thoughts.
That’s it for now. Sorry for the length of this posting, but I needed to spend a lot of time clearing up some things that I didn’t explain very well at the beginning.

Have a great weekend, and if you’re at the Rustlers Pop Warner football game tomorrow at North Middlesex High School (9:00 am start time), look for me. I’ll be the guy with the short haircut and a smile!

Regards,

Chuck

Asking for Your Opinion - Update on Tell A Friend Race

Posted in Community, Events, Pre-Launch, News from Chuck on September 9th, 2006

I’m looking for your opinion on what you think is most important in a community portal serving the Nashoba Valley. I’ve created a little anonymous survey with some multiple choice questions, as well as a comment field. Use the comment field to send me your ideas.

The survey is located at:

www.NashobaValley.com/tellchuck.html

When you fill in the form and submit, you will be redirected back to this blog.

UPDATE: Tell A Friend Race Contest

The contest is starting to heat up a bit, but the contestants are still not close to winning the iPod Nano. Here’s the latest results:

Meslissa Fetterhoff = 5 referrals

Jennifer Koulopoulos = 4 referrals

Nancy Prevost = 2 referrals

Toby Tyler = 2 referrals

Lets make sure all your friends are signed up for the Pre-Launch Notification List. I’m going to have a very special Pre-Launch Prize Package, and I’ll let all of you on the list pick the prize I’m giving away! I’ll send out a survey in a few days.

Thanks,
Chuck

UPDATE - Tell A Friend Race Contest

Posted in Community, Events, Pre-Launch, News from Chuck on September 8th, 2006

Here’s a quick update on the Tell A Friend Race Contest. Right now, there are a number of people who have confirmed referrals. The leaders are:

Melissa Fetterhoff = 4 referrals

Jennifer Koulopoulos = 3 referrals

Nancy Prevost = 2 referrals

Toby Tyler = 2 referrals

Melissa is almost 1/4 the way to the iPod Nano prize, with Jennifer, Nancy, and Toby nipping at her heels.

If you would like to enter, and you are already registered, you can find the “Tell A Friend” form at:

www.NashobaValley.com/tellafriend.html

Good luck to everyone, and keep those referrals coming. I’m going to have even more special surprises for everyone who is on the Pre-Launch Notification List. I’ll be giving you some hints over the next few days!

Thanks,

Chuck

Pre-Launch “Tell A Friend” Race Contest - Win an iPod Nano!

Posted in Community, Events, Pre-Launch, News from Chuck on September 7th, 2006

I’ve decided to try and kick up the membership drive a notch by running a “race contest” for an iPod Nano with 2 Gb of storage. This iPod is worth about $200, and is a great way to store and listen to your favorite music while walking or jogging (or on a plane). And, if you have a child over the age of 6, you could be a hero if you wanted to give it to him or her.

So, here are the rules of the…

Pre-Launch “Tell A Friend” Race Contest

  1. To participate in the contest, you must be registered at www.NashobaValley.com. After completing your registration, you will be redirected to the “Tell A Friend” page.
  2. On the “Tell A Friend” page, you will have the opportunity to send an email to 15 of your friends to let them know about the NashobaValley.com web site, and the “Tell A Friend” Contest.
  3. When one of your referred friends signs up and mentions you as the “Referred by” contact, you will get one point. The “Referred by” form is located at www.NashobaValley.com on the registration form.
  4. The first person to get 15 points will win the iPod Nano. 15 referrals = 15 points. The winner will receive the iPod Nano (or $200 in cash - your choice).
  5. All referred friends must live in towns of the Nashoba Valley - defined here as Ashby, Ayer, Devens, Dunstable, Groton, Harvard, Littleton, Pepperell, Shirley, Townsend, and Westford.

If you have already registered for the NashobaValley.com Pre-Launch List, you can go directly to the “Tell A Friend” page and start entering. To enter again, simply go back to the “Tell A Friend” page and enter more friends.

I understand a few of you have already referred friends, but unfortunately I have no tracking these past referrals - sorry. But, with only 15 referrals needed, you should be able to find some people to sign up as your friend.

Ongoing results will be posted on the NashobaValley.com Pre-Launch Blog.

Good luck!

Chuck
